A Charity Helping Young People Get Outdoors
10 July 2024
A walking charity is expanding its free training program to help young people enjoy the outdoors.
The Ramblers' "Out There Award", first started in Scotland in 2019, will now be offered to up to 70 people in South West England. Events for 18 to 26-year-olds will be held in Bristol, Taunton, and Bridgwater, no matter their background, budget, or experience.
Kate Davis, walking experience officer with The Ramblers, said: "We know the Out There Award really helps people who face the biggest barriers to getting into nature."
The program lasts two days and gives people a chance to learn basic outdoor skills. Heather Thomson from Glasgow did the award in 2022 and said it was "invaluable."
"I didn't come from a family that was very active outdoors, and getting the needed gear can be overwhelming and costly," she said. "I remember thinking, where do I start?"
The program is for young people who want to learn new skills, make friends, or improve their health through gentle walks. The Ramblers charity said that lacking walking buddies, not knowing where to walk, or finding time can all make it hard for young people to get outside.
Ms. Davis added: "We're excited to offer the Out There Award in the South West for the first time. Many young people here don't have the funds to buy outdoor gear or haven't had the chance to explore walking routes. Plus, without cars, getting to green spaces can feel tough."
"The award is made to be inclusive and welcoming, so everyone can get out, feel confident, and enjoy walking."
After the program, 96% of participants felt confident they had the skills and knowledge to walk safely, up from 36% before.
Everyone who completes the award gets a free starter kit with outdoor essentials and a year of free Ramblers membership.
