Frequently Asked Questions on Volunteering

One way to support Hiking in London, while spending time in amazing places and making new friends, is to volunteer. Volunteering is a rewarding experience, but you might have many questions about how to get involved, what volunteering involves, whether training is included, or if you're qualified enough. The frequently asked questions below will help answer many of these queries.

Who can volunteer?

Do I have to be a member of Hiking in London?

No, many of our volunteers are not members of the club. We welcome everyone who is passionate about hiking and wants to contribute to our community of Espartans.

How old should I be?

In general, there is no age limit. As long as you can make a useful and safe contribution, and the activity is suitable for your age, you are welcome to volunteer. However, anyone under 18 must have permission from a parent or guardian and must be supervised by an adult. We cannot always provide supervision, so this may require younger volunteers to participate along with their parent or guardian.

I am receiving government benefits, can I volunteer?

Yes, you can volunteer while receiving benefits. We suggest informing your job center about your volunteering to ensure everything is in order.

I live outside the UK, can I volunteer?

Yes, but it is your responsibility to make sure your visa or immigration status allows you to do volunteer work in the UK. In general, if you are from the European Union or the European Economic Area, you can volunteer. If you have doubts, please check with UK Visas and Immigration.

I am a refugee or asylum seeker, can I volunteer?

If you have refugee status or exceptional leave to remain in the UK, you are welcome to volunteer with us. Asylum seekers can also volunteer. If your final appeal is refused and you are denied leave to remain, you must stop volunteering.

How does volunteering work?

How much time should I give?

There is no minimum time required. You can offer as much time as you wish, depending on your availability and the needs of the club. Some roles may benefit from regular involvement, such as attending one hike per week, but it is entirely flexible.

Will I be paid?

No, as a volunteer you will not be paid. However, we will ensure that you do not incur additional expenses by covering agreed costs, such as transportation between your home and the place where you volunteer.

Is training available?

Yes, but training depends on the role you take on. For example, a hike leader will receive training in first aid and group management, while other roles can be learned by interacting with experienced volunteers. All volunteers receive a complete induction so that they feel confident in their roles.

How will I stay informed about activities?

We use various forms of communication, including briefings, digital newsletters, and social media groups. We also have an online platform where you can update your details, view calendars, and learn about the latest club news.

Are volunteers recognized and rewarded?

Definitely! We organize social events to thank our volunteers, such as dinners, barbecues, and special activities. We also recognize the work of our volunteer teams in our publications and social media, and we have a service award scheme.

Is accommodation provided?

In general, people volunteer at places close to their homes, so we do not provide accommodation. However, for special events or trips that require it, we can discuss accommodation options.

Will I be insured?

Yes, Hiking in London has insurance that covers all our volunteers during club activities, protecting you in case of personal injury or property damage.

Do you have a Volunteering Charter?

Yes, our Volunteering Charter has been created for and by volunteers and staff. We want everyone to have a good experience when volunteering with us, and our charter sets out what you can expect from us and what we expect from you.

What happens next?

I want to volunteer, what should I do now?

Fantastic! Look for opportunities near you on our website, and once you find a role that interests you, complete the corresponding application form. Someone from our team will contact you to discuss the next steps, which may include a visit and an informal chat.

Can groups get involved?

Yes, many different groups volunteer with us, from corporate teams to community and family groups. It is a great way to strengthen relationships and contribute positively to the community.
